Other TiVo Tricks and Easter Eggs

After I learned about the handy 30 second skip feature hidden away inside my TiVo, I went on the prowl for other features to improve the already wonderful television viewing experience my TiVo brings me. Here's what I found... so far.

Quicker Hiding

Sometimes when I'm archiving to tape a program I've recorded on my TiVo, the progress bar at the bottom of the screen remains in view as the program begins playing. I'd rather it not be there in my taped archive. Turns out you can make it hide itself faster.

Enter the codes SELECT PLAY SELECT PAUSE SELECT and you'll immediately notice the progress bar disappearing much faster after it displays. (Well, I noticed it, anyway.) As with the 30 second skip trick, re-enter the code to restore the previous functionality.

Clock Display

Supposedly pressing SELECT PLAY SELECT 9 SELECT will enable a clock display in the bottom right corner of the screen. Unfortunately, this feature doesn't seem tow work on my Series 1 Phillips TiVo. Guess I'll just have to press the info button or the right arrow to see the time. Or I could, you know, look at the clock on the wall near the television. But where's the fun in that?

Status Display

NOTE that while testing this "feature" the only way I could disable it was by rebooting my TiVo. Not a big deal, but kind of a bother. Besides, the usefulness of the feature doesn't really warrant even trying it. (So why list it here? he asks himself. Cuz I'm a geek, he replies.)

Pressing SELECT PLAY SELECT INSTANT-REPLAY SELECT displays a thin, somewhat cryptic status display in the bottom left corner of my television screen during playback. It reads "input 0: InputRecording 2 || Mode COMPLETED (PlayRecording)" on my TV right now. If that means something to you, then maybe you wanna enable this feature.

I've jotted down a few other tips on my site because I can never remember the codes. You can find them here.
